Dr. Arvind Virmani

Arvind Virmani is Director and Professor, ICRIER (Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations). His areas of research are: Macroeconomics & Growth, Taxation & Tax Reform, External & Financial Sectors.

Dr. Virmani has held various distinguished positions. He was Advisor, Development Policy in the Planning Commission and Senior Economic Advisor in the Department of Economic Affairs, Ministry of Finance. He was Advisor (Policy Planning) to the Finance Minister. Before joining the government, he was Senior Economist in the World Bank Research Dept.

He Chaired the Working Group on Public Debt Management (middle office) and Inter-ministerial Group on Customs Duty Reform and was Member-Secretary of the Steering Group on Foreign Investment. He served as Member of the Appellate Tribunal for the Securities & Exchange Board of India (SEBI) and the Depositories Act. He has served as Director of Punjab National Bank & Allahabad Bank and Trustee of the Unit Trust of India (UTI). He was Member of the RBI Technical Advisory Group on Money and Government Security Markets, the Steering Group on International Financial Standards and Codes and the UTI Committee on reform and stabilisation of the US64 scheme.

Dr. Virmani has published extensively in national and international journals of repute including the Journal of Political Economy, Journal of Public Economics, Greek Economic Review, The World Bank Economic Review, Indian Economic Review, Indian Economic Journal, Economic and Political Weekly, Journal of Foreign Exchange and International Finance and RBI Bulletin among others. His contribution in books include among others, International Trade and Balance of Payments in Eighth Plan Perspectives edited by M S Adiseshiah, Lancer International, Delhi, 1990 and Saving Performance and Prospects: A Historical Perspective in Domestic Savings in India: Trends and Issues, edited by U. D. R. Choudhury & A. Bagchi, Vikas Publishing House, Delhi, 1990
