Structure Dr. Rashid Amjad Dr Rashid Amjad is presently Vice-Chancellor of Pakistan Institute of Development Economics and Member/Chief Economist at the Planning and Development Division, Islamabad. Dr. Amjad graduated from Government College, Lahore in Economics and Political Science (First Class) and went on to do his Tripos in Economics and PhD. from the University of Cambridge, UK. His PhD thesis was on “Private Industrial Investment in Pakistan 1960-70”, and it was published by Cambridge University Press in its prestigious South Asian Studies series, the first volume by a Pakistani. Dr. Amjad taught at the Punjab University for seven years between 1969 and 1980, when he left to join the ILO. In the ILO, he has held a number of positions including:
He was Chief of the ILO’s World Employment Report Team which published two global reports on Employability and Training and Life at Work in the Information Economy. Dr Amjad over the years, has worked in a large number of countries in Asia, Africa, and the Middle East on employment, labour market and HRD issues. He was closely associated with the labour market reforms in China in the late 1980s and early 1990s. He has worked extensively on Pakistan both before and during his career with the ILO. He was a member of the Panel of Economists set up by the Government of Pakistan to frame Pakistan’s Fifth-Five Year Plan. He was a member of the National Manpower Commission set up in 1987. His book (with Prof. Viqar Ahmed) on Management of the Pakistan Economy, 1947-82, introduced a new, analytical perspective in studying Pakistan’s economic development and has been widely read by students and policy-makers over the years.
