Climate Change And Agriculture: Effects On India And Other Developing Countries

Our aim is to determine the impact of climate change on developing economies in general, and India in particular. From the Indian perspective, the proposed analysis would throw light on the impacts of anticipated climate change on land use, agricultural production, food supply and availability, and on other economic activities. The role of adaptation strategies for agriculture to mitigate the negative effects of agriculture would be looked into along with role that government can play to alleviate the sufferings of the poor. Not but least, we would examine the economic implications for India of its accession to a global greenhouse gas abatement program.

An important by product of the study is the incorporation of the special features pertaining to India’s agriculture in a global setting. So for India, it would be feasible to assess the impact of unfinished agricultural policy reforms on the economy and the distributional consequences.

Since climate change is a global phenomenon, the impact analysis should be carried out in a framework that takes into account the global transmission mechanism. This can be facilitated using Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) model with multi-market agricultural sectors and incorporating special features pertaining to Indian agriculture.
