A Cost Analysis of Medical Education in India

The demand for Medical education has been rising higher and higher over the years despite the fact that the cost of Medical Education has also been rising very steeply beyond comparison to the cost of graduate education in any other field of study. Many private unaided Medical Colleges have been established in the recent years. But still the demand for Medical Education is very high. How much public importance is attached to each category of Medical Education? Has the planning for Medical Education in this country taken into account the ever-growing demand for it? These issues can be understood only through a study of cost and financing of Medical Education in India. How much public resources are allocated to each category of Medical Education in the country? What is the cost - public and private - of each category of Medical Education?

The study will aim to analyse the costs and financing of Medical Graduate Education in India with a case study of Tamilnadu State. The analysis will include different categories of Medical Graduate Education in the state. It will study the private as well as social cost of Medical Education. It will study the financing of Medical education from the social and egalitarian considerations. It will analyse the efficacy of alternative ways of financing different categories of Medical Education.

Both primary and secondary data will be used for the study. The study proposes to survey all medical colleges in the state and a sample of students from each college. The study can be completed within a period of twelve months from the date of sanctioning. It will involve a cost of US Dollars 15645 only.
