Completed Studies: Abstract
Exports and Economic Growth in South Asia
The hypothesis of export-led growth, which has received considerable
attention in the trade and development literature, argues that exports
contribute positively to economic growth through a variety of channels.
It is generally believed that the developing countries can improve their
growth prospects by following an export-oriented trade and development
strategy. The major objective of the proposed study is to examine the
role of exports in the growth performance of the South Asian countries.
In particular, the study would explore the exports-economic growth nexus
by employing the Engle-Granger Cointegration and Error Correction approach
to assess whether or not each South Asian country exhibits statistically
significant evidence of export-led growth. The study would also examine
the export performance of the South Asian countries at a disaggregated
level with a view to highlighting the contribution of principal sub-sectors
of exports.
