SANEI: Completed Studies: Abstract

Economics of Pensions and Social Security in South Asia: Special Focus on India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh

The purpose of the proposed study is to identify the modalities of a comprehensive pension scheme for the elderly population in South Asia, particularly focussing on India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. In the light of the growing size of the elderly population and the problems encountered, the study makes an attempt to highlight major components of a comprehensive pension scheme, its implications for the national exchequer and relative roles of different sectors.

The major objectives of the study include:

Assessing the ageing scenario: past, present and future

Reviewing the policies and programmes for the elderly

A sample survey will be conducted in all three countries to assess the pensioners' and social assistance receiver's views and their impact on reducing the incidence of poverty, meeting food requirements and other health maintenance programmes

Review of government financing in running old age home and other related services for the elderly

Review of the concessions and benefits reserved for the elderly

The study would attempt to suggest modalities of a comprehensive pension and social assistance scheme for the elderly by undertaking a review of pension schemes and policies for the elderly in select counties, particularly USA, UK and Japan.
